Caregivers who participate in the ICDP programme are taken through
a process of self-reflection and are encouraged to develop a positive
conception of their children, as well as a deeper understanding
and confidence about their own roles as caregivers.
The message of the programme
to caregivers is expressed in the '8 guidelines for good interaction',
used as topics for both discussion, personal exploration and group
sharing. The guidelines can be summarized as three dialogues: the
emotional, the comprehension and the regulation dialogue. All participant
caregivers receive a booklet called " I am a person too",
which they use for self-evaluation of their own everyday interactive
habits.
How to convey the message
to caregivers is based on carefully chosen pedagogic principles
formulated as '7 principles of sensitizing'. There are accompanying
suggestions for specific exercises and activities. Facilitators
and promoters receive manuals, didactic videos and tool kits for
their practical field work.
An implementation checklist
is considered before starting the programme in a new community to
help establish the programme in an effective and sustainable way.
Base line assessments are carried in order to understand the context
of the project. There are different agendas depending whether the
work is to be carried out with families, in preschools, schools
etc. Careful monitoring through field visits takes place all throughout
the project, including the use of self monitoring checklists for
all those involved. ICDP aims to have all its projects evaluated,
usually by the psychology department of the local university.
TYPICAL
INTERACTIVE SITUATIONS
The 8 guidelines for
good interaction are embedded in concrete and typical situations
and experiences that occur in everyday life.
Caregivers start by analysing
these typical experiences, which are discussed, shared, role played,
reconstructed and improved.
Pictures, photos, posters
and video films are made of everyday interactive situations and
are used in group work with caregivers who create narratives and
dialogues for the shown images.
The 8 guidelines
will 'emerge' as result of the analysis of the situation itself.
