THE
8 GUIDELINES AND THE 3 DIALOGUES previous
continue (page

The messages of the 8 guidelines for good interaction
are simple and universal, naturally embedded in caregiver-child
communication and present in any culture. Clearly, there are great
differences between cultures in the way these 8 guidelines are expressed
– finding out how they are already practiced by local caregivers
is the first step in the programme.
Instead of teaching the 8 guidelines in an instructive
way, they are used in question form. This forms a basis for consciousness
raising and sensitising, as well as creating confidence and trust
in caregivers’ capacity to care for their children:
EMOTIONAL
DIALOGUE - Guidelines 1, 2, 3, 4:
1. SHOW YOUR CHILD YOU LOVE HIM OR HER - ‘How
do you express love when you are with your child?’
2. FOLLOW YOUR CHILD'S LEAD - ‘Do you give
your child space for his or her initiative? How do you follow and
respond to your child’s initiatives?’
3. TALK TO YOUR CHILD. GET A CONVERSATION GOING
BY MEANS OF EMOTIONAL EXPRESSIONS, GESTURES AND SOUNDS. - ‘How
do you hold warm and intimate conversation with your child?’
4. PRAISE AND APPRECIATE WHAT YOUR CHILD MANAGES
TO DO - ‘How do you praise and show approval?’
COMPREHENSION
DIALOGUE - Guidelines 5, 6, 7:
5. HELP YOUR CHILD TO FOCUS HIS/HER ATTENTION AND
SHARE EXPERIENCES - 'How do you focus your attention with your child's?'
6. HELP YOUR CHILD TO MAKE SENSE OF HIS/HER WORLD
- 'How do you share and give meaning to your child's experiences?
How do you show enthusiasm for what your child is experimenting?'
7. HELP YOUR CHILD TO WIDEN HIS/HER EXPERIENCE -
'How do you talk about what interest him or her; how do you expand
on your child's experiences?'
REGULATION
DIALOGUE - Guidelines 8a, 8b:
8a. HELP YOUR CHILD TO LEARN RULES, LIMITS AND VALUES
- ‘How do you regulate his/her behaviour and solve possible
conflicts with other children?’ ‘How do you establish
norms, values and set limits?’
8b. HELP YOUR
CHILD TO PLAN ACTIVITIES STEP BY STEP TO REACH THE SET GOAL - ‘How
do you participate in your child’s activities and projects
in a constructive way that would allow your child to achieve the
set goals and learn new skills?’
